Montecatini Alta is a quiet and attractive small medieval town which can be a refreshing break from the crowds in Florence. It can be reached by a gentle drive up the winding road or on the Funiculare railway from Montecatini Terme. Piazza G. Giusti is its main square and has a few restaurants. From here a short climb brings you to the 12th century Chiesa di San Pietro and the Torre Campanaria one of the remainng elements of the towns defensive walls destroyed by the Florentines in 1554.

Serravalle Pistoiese is another small strategic hill top town founded in the 11th century and fortified in the 12th century. It passed from Pistoiese to the Malaspina family who placed it under control from Lucca and thence it fell under Florentine rule.
Montecatini Terme is a large town famous as a resort with health giving waters from its terme (the first in 1540) it developed from the 18th century onwards and now has luxury spa resorts and hotels.
